Job Search Strategy: Pro Resume Tips
Thank you for signing up for YIEE. We will help you grow your career. YIEE is a non-profit organization that aims at digitalizing Africa and helping youths across Africa achieve their career dream.
As part of our welcome package, we will be giving you pro tips on how to write a resume that gets the job.
When writing a resume/cv, you need to know this
Avoid sharing too many personal details. Things like country, state, DOB, place of birth etc. These things are not needed as they take space. Remove them.
Instead of having personal details, let your resume contain important information like LinkedIn URL (if it is up-to-date)/portfolio, email address and phone number.
If you're currently studying, place your education section above your working experience section but graduates should do otherwise.
Always think of value. Ensure your resume is projected towards adding values. Values can be measured in #leadership, #revenue, #impact. While writing your experience section follow Stephanie Nuesi CAR method.
C - Context: Explain what you've done in your period positions then relate it to the current role you're applying for.
A - Achievement: Speak about what you've achieved earlier.
R - Result: What result did you drove to the company?
Consider these two examples from different job applicants below, if you are a recruiter who will you pick?
Example one: Increased email subscribers while working at TechBridge.
Example two: Increased email subscribers from 1, 000 - 10, 000 (900%) through paid advertising, email marketing and copywriting, Added a revenue of $8, 000+ to the organization.
You will choose example two right, why? because it speaks in context (increased email subscribers), it talks about the achievement (900% increase) and it communicates the result ($8, 000 revenue).
Optimize your resume. There are some important skills a recruiter or #hiringmanager is seeking. So you need to find those skills and talk about how you've used them in your resume.
Always bold your skills (keyword in your resume. As it will be easier for the recruiter to see them and how you’ve used them in time past.
Pro Tips: Depending on your experience, kindly reduce your resume to fit. Below are the years of experience and the ideal number of pages.
1 - 5 years experience: 1 - page
